The Tale of Mount Sinai Hospital & The Apple iPhone by Joe Heinowski

While many many software and hardware companies are showing progress, there’s also the problem that the big EHR providers, like Cerner and Epic Systems, have yet to build applications for these platforms.

An early example, Citrix’s new iPhone simulator app that would allow health practitioners to access Windows based applications like EHR’s developed by Cerner. A good start but not necessarily leveraging the mobile platform to the best of its ability.

Will Healthcare be Ready for the iPad Generation

I have no doubt the technology will be there.  I fear, however, that we underestimate how deeply engrained provider-centric care delivery is.  And for some reason, I’m thinking the whole “appointment/waiting room/do as I say because I’m the trained professional here” concept won’t sit well with her!

The iPad: Changing Healthcare Conversations

By announcing the iPad yesterday, Apple brings large screen multitouch computing to the masses (better resolution video on the Apple site.  Recommended!)

This technology will stimulate a lot of healthcare innovation from better EMR user interface to healthcare consumer apps.  I see the greatest potential, however, in how it can completely change face-to-face healthcare conversations (see an earlier post for an example of what I mean).

Care Designers are the ones who will make it happen.  From ethnographically discovering why, where and how those conversations need to happen, to designing new care environments to stimulate and facilitate them, to new applications, user interfaces and interaction models.
